EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS FELLOWSHIPS NAMES CLASS OF 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Equal Justice Works has awarded 48 legal fellowships for 2009. The new Fellows officially will begin their two-year terms in September, joining 54 other Fellows already in the field.

Equal Justice Works Fellowships is the largest postgraduate legal fellowship program in the U.S. More than 300 lawyers and law students submitted applications for the Class of 2009. The new Fellows are funded by 34 sponsors; represent 35 Equal Justice Works member law schools; and will be working at organizations in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Equal Justice Works also engages more than 35 lawyers as AmeriCorps Legal Fellows and more than 350 law students as members of the Summer Corps program.

Each year, many law students graduate with a desire to work on behalf of underserved communities and causes. Those who apply for an Equal Justice Works fellowship are given the opportunity to design their “dream jobs” working with nonprofit organizations which have agreed to host applicants who are awarded a fellowship. Many Fellows are sponsored by law firms or corporations whose interests may intersect with the proposed project. Fellowship projects range across a wide spectrum of issues, from protecting immigrant children to protecting the environment, from helping communities rebuild torn neighborhoods to helping survivors of domestic violence rebuild their torn lives.

“The Class of 2009 is entering the field when people need affordable legal services the most,” said Cait Clarke, Director of Public Interest Law Opportunities at Equal Justice Works. “These attorneys have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to justice and I’m proud to welcome them into the legal services community.”

The application for the 2010 class of Equal Justice Works Fellows will be available in July. For more information about Equal Justice Works Fellowships and other public interest law opportunities, visit http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/programs.
