JUDGE DAVID S. TATEL
JOINS BOARD OF EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Equal Justice Works announced today that the Honorable David S. Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has joined its board of directors. Judge Tatel will offer guidance and expertise to help further the goals of the national public interest law nonprofit organization. For more than 20 years, Equal Justice Works has partnered with the nation’s law schools, law firms, corporate legal departments, bar foundations and nonprofit organizations to provide public interest opportunities for lawyers and law students.

As a board member, Judge Tatel joins some of the nation’s leaders—who come from law firms, law schools, corporate legal departments and the public sector—in this effort. The Equal Justice Works board of directors includes Anastasia Kelly, General Counsel, AIG; Amy Schulman, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Pfizer Inc (effective June 23); Cesar Alvarez, Chief Executive Officer, Greenberg Traurig; Sven Holmes, General Counsel, KPMG; and the Honorable Ann Claire Williams, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.

Judge Tatel was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals by President Bill Clinton in 1994, where he filled the seat vacated by Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s elevation to the U.S. Supreme Court. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1963 and the University of Chicago Law School in 1966, he began his legal career with the Chicago-based law firm Sidley & Austin. In 1969, he became the director of the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Judge Tatel has also served as Director, National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in Washington, D.C.; Acting General Counsel, Legal Services Corporation; and Director, Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. As an associate and partner for Hogan & Hartson, Judge Tatel headed the firm’s Community Services Department and he later ran the firm’s education group.

“Judge Tatel has been a champion for civil rights and equal justice for more than four decades,” said David Stern, Chief Executive Officer of Equal Justice Works. “It is a privilege to have someone of his caliber involved in our organization. We are honored that he has joined our board.”
