Regional Director of Development
Equal Justice Works is seeking a Regional Director of Development to manage a donor portfolio including individuals, corporations and law firms. The Regional Director is one of a seven-person development department raising $9.5 million annually.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Equal Justice Works has experienced tremendous growth in the past 10 years and we expect continued success in our programs and development efforts. Some key trends:
- Sponsorship renewal rates above 90 percent. Thanks in part to a matching grant by the Open Society Institute (OSI), in the past 10 years we have funded our prestigious Fellowship Program with the support of law firms, corporations and bar foundations. In recent years, as the dollar value of OSI’s grant has decreased, our support from the private sector has continued to grow.
- Growth in national scope and support. In the last five years, we have increased the revenues from our annual awards dinner and regional receptions from $700,000 to $1.9 million.
- Foundation potential. Our programs present a variety of funding opportunities for foundations. Presently, just 20 percent of our annual budget comes from foundations.
- Individual donor potential. This year we received a grant from the Ford Foundation to launch Equal Justice Works’ first individual donor campaign. This promising new initiative is led by our Director of Development.
- A model for disaster relief. In the immediate aftermath of Katrina, we secured the resources to place 19 lawyers in the Gulf to work for two years on behalf of communities that were decimated by the hurricanes.
- A supportive, engaged and influential board of directors. Our board is made up of leaders in the legal profession including notable lawyers from corporations and law firms as well as representatives from the judiciary, academia and the public interest sector.
- Strong financials. Enhanced financial and accounting systems and a healthy reserve fund help to maintain a secure financial position for the organization.
